Cold cases are investigations in which all current evidence and statements have been exhausted without a successful closure of the case. The case remains open, and may be reviewed by investigators from time to time as new evidence or investigative procedures become available. Internet technology provides a possible new investigative procedure by allowing anyone world-wide who may have relevant information on a cold case, to view case details on-line and contact investigators or the San Francisco Police Department anonymous tip line. Any scrap of information or knowledge, no matter how seemingly small or insignificant, can mean the difference between the case being solved and closed, or remaining unsolved as a cold case. SFPD currently seeks the public's help in the following "bias based homicide" cold cases and cases which have affected the LGBT community of San Francisco:
